What does a half-mask respirator cover?

The half-mask respirator covers the lower half of the face, specifically the nose, mouth, and chin. It leaves the eyes and upper face exposed, allowing the wearer to use safety goggles or other protective eyewear separately. The respirator forms a tight seal around the nose and mouth to filter out harmful particles, gases, or vapors from the air, depending on the type of filter or cartridge used. Half-mask respirators are commonly used in environments where respiratory protection is needed but full-face coverage is not required.

Respirators that cover the nose and mouth are called half-mask respirators. Those that cover the face, including the eyes, are called full-face respirators. Both types use any mix of prefilters, filters, and cartridges. The type of filter or cartridge needed depends on the hazard.
